Ø Response to the One Time Payment: A One-Time Check or Permanent Progress?
On February 26, the CHRO sent a message encouraging employees to accept a one-time 3% payment.
Let’s be clear. Non represented employees had no choice. Represented employees do!
If compensation is on the table, it must be bargained. That is why we opened a reopener to our recently expired contract. Our position is simple: funding should increase base salaries and pension calculations for employees on the step schedule, as promised.
A one time payment sounds generous. It is not structural…is taxed higher than base pay and not counted toward your retirement.
Why Base Salary Is Power
EXAMPLE: Starting salary: $80,000
One-Time 3% Payment
- You receive $2,400.
- Your base stays $80,000.
- Future raises are calculated on $80,000.
3% Added to Base Salary
- Your base becomes $82,400.
- Future raises are calculated on $82,400.
One time payments reset the clock. Permanent increases move the floor. This is the difference between optics and real compensation growth. We did not fight to restore the step system so it could be sidelined by temporary checks. We fought for a structure that builds year after year and strengthens your retirement. Management can offer a check. Only collective action can secure lasting gains.
Membership is leverage. Leverage wins permanent raises.
If you are benefiting from union representation but are not yet a member, ask yourself why.
Temporary payments disappear. Permanent progress compounds.
