With their UNION YES votes, we will double in size and membership might, and become the largest union of undergraduate student workers in the U.S.

It is an all-hands-on-deck moment and CSUEU members have a huge role to play to help Student Assistants Get Out the Vote!

What can you do? Talk to every Student Assistant you know and urge them to vote. A team of CSUEU members – backed by a small army of organizers from sibling SEIU unions – will be on the ground to spread the word across 23 campuses. More information: www.csueu.org/sa .

>> Press Release

Here’s what to know:

Student Assistants eligible to vote are those who were employed from May – October 2023. They will receive an email with a ballot link and voting instructions today. There’s also a cute union video for how to vote.

Voting starts on Jan. 25 and ends Feb. 22. (But we want everyone to vote the earlier the better!)

If you hold a supervisory position, it’s best to share with Student Assistants you work with the benefits of having a union – but don’t make them feel like you are instructing them to vote, or how to vote.

There is no mistake that we are in the midst of a movement where workers are rising to demand respect and pay that matches the value of our labor. The CFA strike this week showed the power of workers coming together to win improvements in pay and working conditions. Student Assistants are next!

Here’s Ashley Hanson, Health Education Assistant from East Bay, explaining why she joined the effort to help student workers win:

As wealth disparities continue to widen, unions give the people who do the work to keep society running a voice and an opportunity to create a fairer economy. He was a committed union member who dedicated his time to serve our Chapter in a multitude of roles: Event volunteer, Steward, Chapter Officer, Contract Action Team lead, Vice President; and Organizing Chair. At the statewide level, Dan worked with the Organizing Committee to grow our membership, knowing that we are stronger when we stand together. He took on every role in a collaborative manner and always sought to do more.

We will miss our coworker, activist, and most importantly, our supportive friend. In this difficult time for his family, we extend our heartfelt condolences and wish them the strength to endure this irreparable loss.

A celebration of life is being held on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 12:00 p.m. at Cal Bowl, 2500 E. Carson St., Lakewood, CA 90712.

"Dan Tate was an enthusiastic activist, loyal friend, and loving father. He thoroughly enjoyed his union work and took tremendous pride in developing creative solutions to complicated issues in service of others. He was a devoted father to his daughter Darcy. Kim also served as Chapter President at CSU Sacramento, where she worked as an Administrative Analyst Specialist in Human Resources. Kim passed away on March 14.

(Photo L-R: Assemblymember Shirley Weber, Kim Harrington, Vicky McLeod)

Vicky McLeod, Chapter President at Fullerton and current Chair of the Legislative Committee, worked closely with Kim during their years on the committee. In memory of Kim and to honor her contributions to the Union, Vicky contributes the following “In Appreciation” piece.

Where to begin - Kim Harrington gave of her time freely and offered her expertise and knowledge working in Human Resources at Sacramento State. Serving and guiding employees with the fee waiver program showed how much she encouraged employees to continue their education and develop professionally. As Chapter President, Kim was a true leader who guided her Executive Board with confidence and collaboration. She fought to bring justice to CSUEU employees, and it showed when Sacramento State dealt with issues on health and safety. Her motto was doing the ethical thing and treating each employee with the utmost respect regardless of classification.

Working with Kim on the Legislative Committee was a true honor and privilege as she was the oracle of the committee and the parent. Our close-knit committee became an extended family enjoying many breakfasts, lunches, and dinners sharing private stories of family, work, and life. A running joke among the committee, Sacramento was Kim’s hometown, and she introduced us to neat stores and eateries but often went down a one-way street or got turned around within the city. Learning about her children, parents, siblings, and love for being a public servant and assisting employees to be treated with respect was just the tip of the iceberg. Kim never spoke down to anyone and uplifted and allowed each person to show their strengths. The committee could giggle and be silly, but she would become the parent and be stern to get us on track when needed. She truly touched my heart and soul as she could talk with you and not at you. We shared likes and dislikes during committee breaks and often talked about politics, spirituality, and the Union.

A fond memory: one year while planning Lobby Day, the team created a scavenger hunt, and we split into two groups and raced to see who could win to find all the items within the state Capitol. Kim had a bad knee and could not move too fast, but the committee members were competitive and took off running to come in first place. We all laughed and continued to see how long it took to find all the items. Kim stood firm as our leader. With her determination and direction, the committee moved forward to obtain an author (Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber) to bring steps back for employees. Due to the pandemic, the bill did not move.

However, the salary study to review support staff salary transpired from the bills. Kim’s legacy will be the justice of returning an improved salary structure and steps to Support Staff.

I miss my friend and know that the stars are aligned, and she is watching over us. Kim gave me Archangel Oracle Cards by Doreen Virtue, and recently, I opened the box and pulled: Victory! Archangel Sandalphon: “Your prayers have been heard and answered. Have faith.” She is present.

Kim’s family requests that donations be made to the National Breast Cancer Coalition in her name.

2021 CSUEU Statewide Electionshttps://csueu.org/news/archive/2021-csueu-statewide-electionsMembershipFri, 16 Apr 2021 11:23:18 GMTUnion Statewide Elections

CSUEU is holding statewide elections for the offices of President, Vice President for Organizing, Vice President for Finance and Vice President for Representation of CSUEU.
