Student
Workers and Union Staff Rising Together
|
The CSU Board of Trustees met
last week and wow did they hear an earful. Nearly 500 Staff,
Faculty, and Student Workers turned out for the second
"Summer of Solidarity" rally on July 11 with two key
demands: Fair contracts for employees and a fair election
for Student Workers who want to form a union.
|
|
|
|
|
|
CSUEU members delivered
our petition signed by nearly 5,000 workers demanding that
the University take concrete action to address the ongoing crisis
of recruitment and retention.
We need better compensation if the CSU is going to fix high
vacancies and turnover that jeopardize the University
mission of serving students. Add your voice to be counted!

Student Workers delivered
nearly 600
personal post cards to Trustees affirming that Student
Work is Real Work.
Cameron Macedonio, General
Manager of Titan Radio at CSU Fullerton, delivered the cards,
along with his own message: “I run the radio station and manage a
team of more than 100 people. I’m the only manager I know who
makes minimum wage.”
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cameron questioned the CSU
claim that the student assistant role is only meant to supplement
affordability, not provide real employment.
“If that is the CSU position,”
he asked, “why do you hire us to do the same work as union staff
with none of the benefits or protections? I know the answer –
it's because we’re cheaper!”

"Like every
other worker at the CSU, we deserve and demand recognition,
respect, and the right to vote for our union. Remember, the CSU
doesn’t fall apart without you all, it falls apart without
us!" - Cameron Macedonio, Student Worker, CSU Fullerton

Two
Damning Reports: The CSU Fails to Protect Students and Staff
Against Harassment, Discrimination, and Retaliation
|
|
|
|
|
|
Two separate reviews into
the CSU's handling of sexual harassment complaints from
students and staff are complete and the findings show systemwide
failures that start at the top.
For years CSUEU members
have called on the Office of the Chancellor to provide
stronger oversight given that campuses have a history of
sweeping egregious abuses of students and staff under the
rug. The two reports - one produced
by a law firm hired to conduct a systemwide assessment
of the University’s Title IX practices and the other coming from
a state
audit - were made public this week and drew intense media
scrutiny.
The highlights:
- The
Cozen report found "( a) lack of trust across the
system and throughout all stakeholders, including students,
staff and faculty with regard to the university’s concern
for their well-being and handling of their reports." It
also cited the need for an accountability process.
- The
state audit said, "The problems and
inconsistencies we found during this audit warrant
systemwide changes at CSU. In particular, the Chancellor’s
Office must take a more active approach to overseeing
campuses’ efforts to prevent and address sexual
harassment."
Here's the quote from CSUEU
President Catherine Hutchinson in USA
Today:
"We fully
support one core finding of the report: The CSU needs to
centralize its oversight program if it will ever repair its
failures in handling Title IX compliance, including
discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Talk to students and
staff and you will see there is little, if any, faith in campus
leadership to do the right thing. At Fresno State, the same
administrators who worked under former Chancellor Castro, a
failed leader who exited in disgrace, are now being recommended
to implement recommendations made in the Cozen report. Union
staff members must sit at the table and be heard if campuses are
serious about increasing transparency and accountability."
