Chapters
Leading on the Path Forward
|
Chapter presidents
Eri Roman, Chico 302, and Fortune Garcia, Fresno 309, brought
together their Executive Boards on Dec. 1-2 to learn how to have
organizing conversations, what the Path Forward looks like in
2023, and most importantly to learn about the value of
relationships in our union. Whether it be member to member,
member to non-member, or even member to student assistant,
relationships are key to winning as a union.

"Without the
Union, there would be nothing in place to ensure we are recognized
and rewarded for the integral work we do on campus," said
Ann Wilson, Chico's BU 7 Rep. "It is so very important that
represented employees join together through membership and
volunteer work to help the Union bargain for and win better wages,
hours and working conditions for the staff that holds this
University together."

2023 CalPERS Health Benefits Plan Rates
|
Updated rates for
health plans for 2023 are here. Our most utilized health plan,
Kaiser, has reduced the cost both for an employee plus a
dependent as well as for an employee with two or more
dependents. The rates are set by CalPERS and the three least
expensive plans are offered to CSUEU represented employees
at no cost.

Members Launch Online Petition to
Highlight Waste at Channel Islands
|
For months,
thousands of dollars' worth of furniture and electronics were
abandoned outside loading docks at Channel Islands, rotting and
warping under heat and rain, all because Management
refused to hire Laborers to properly organize and deliver
the items to students and faculty who could use them. Last
week, CSUEU members launched an online petition, telling
Management to "Stop the Waste!"
|
|
|
|
|
|
Accompanying the
petition was a video showing photos of
hundreds of discarded tables, desks, cabinets and electronics
left outdoors.
Workers' activism
had immediate results: Management reached out to the chapter
leadership to engage in discussions. The goal is to identify a
solution that benefits the campus, students, and staff - and
stops the waste. We are awaiting Management’s response to CSUEU’s
demands.

BREAKING NEWS:
Workers of Academia Are Unionizing!
|
Student Worker
Power? Heck, yeah. On Wednesday, Boston University
graduate workers and SEIU Local 509 announced that 3,200
workers who provide research, instructional, and teaching
services at the University have won their union election in a
landslide victory. Out of the 1,442 workers who voted, 98% voted
in favor of forming a union. The final vote count was 1414-28.

CSUEU is proud we
played a small part in the winning campaign! This
week, Emily Hake, a staff organizer, and Jeanette Corona, a
Member Organizer from San Diego State University, were on the
ground at BU to help in the final stretch to get workers to the
polls.
"It's
incredible to see all the hard work of members pay off,"
said Emily. "Now they have grown their power and size by
organizing graduate student workers into the union. The campus
community was elated. I'm excited for this day to come for CSUEU
members and the CSU student workers who are uniting right now by
signing cards for an election."

To support the CSU
student workers to get their election, please email Organizing@csueu.org or tell your
chapter leadership you are interested in growing our union power
by getting involved in student worker organizing.

It's a new state
Legislative session and CSUEU members want to make sure that our
priority issues - funding for higher education and
protecting workers' rights - are on the legislators' calendar.
Legislative Committee Chair Vicky McLeod and Vice Chair Sarah
Schraeder met with key leaders to show our support and to
highlight the vital role of Support Staff at the CSU.

The largest strike
by Academic Workers in the nation's history continues with Week
#4. At stake: A fair contract and fair wages for 48,000 workers
represented by UAW at the University of California. CSUEU
Executive Director Jim Philliou, with members Sarah Schraeder and
Vicky McLeod, joined the strike/rally at the state Capitol on
Monday (Dec. 5) to show solidarity.

With profound
sadness, CSUEU Long Beach Chapter 315 shares the loss of a dear
friend and colleague, Dan Tate, who played ball with us, laughed
at our silly jokes, listened with empathy, and unconditionally
supported the diversity of viewpoints within our Union.
We remember and
celebrate the man who dedicated his life to his family and to his
union work, an activist who turned worksite challenges into
opportunities to advocate for worker’s rights and inspire
union-building. >> Full article
