ASI Long Beach bargaining update: We’re making progress toward guaranteed raises
We proposed a step system with guaranteed wage increases each year where we earn more based on our years of service. At our bargaining session, management responded openly to this approach though we still need to hammer out the details.
For ASI students, management has not responded to the full proposal we presented more than two weeks ago. Management’s position is that students should bargain separately. However everyone agrees the union contracts for staff and students will be similar, except when it comes to wages and benefits.
Now that wages are on the table, it is critical we demonstrate unity across all ASI worksites to show we are staying in the fight until we win a union contract that provides livable wages and a workplace where ALL workers are treated with dignity.
“We have made progress in our contract negotiations, coming closer to agreeing to the legal language of our contract. On top of that, management has indicated a willingness to consider our steps proposal. Steps would ensure that we would have guaranteed raises, meaning we would no longer have to wonder when or what our next raise is.
But wages are only one part of our fight. Across ASI, our coworkers are raising critical issues about working conditions, breaks, scheduling, and day-to-day issues. Some of these concerns may not apply to all of us, but every issue matters. A union is strongest when we stand up not only for ourselves, but for each other. That’s why we are fighting for a contract that improves our workplace conditions and protect us from managers that mistreat their workers.
The progress we’ve made so far proves that when we organize and stay united, we move management. But we’re not finished. We need to send a strong message to management that our union is growing and ready to stand together until we win a contract we deserve.
