Long Beach Members Are United With Beach Shops Workers
At CSU Long Beach, employees at the non-profit organization, Beach Shops, work in dining halls, the bookstore, and as office staff. They support student success on campus, just like CSUEU members do.
A majority of employees at Beach Shops filed for a union election with the NLRB on March 14. They will vote to join CSUEU on April 23. After the employees win their union, they will sit down with management to negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Long Beach CSUEU members marched on the boss of Beach Shops to let management know that Long Beach is a union campus. We will not accept using student fees for anti-union tactics or messaging. Unfortunately, the executive director of Beach Shops, Miles Nevin, needed to hear this message.
Since Beach Shops workers filed for an election, management has fought to exclude workers from our proposed bargaining unit and has sent multiple emails to workers that come close to defying their supposed "neutral" stance on unions.

CSUEU member Jorge Becerravillarreal delivered a letter signed by state Senate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez demonstrating her support for campus workers seeking union representation. "We are one community on campus, and we all work together to support student success. That's why we are proud of our colleagues in Beach Shops," said Jorge.
One step in our Path to Power Plan 2025 is organizing non-union workers on campus, and this will be the first election this year executing that plan. Our union looks forward to supporting these workers in winning their election, and growing our power on campus.
Campuses Turn Out to Fight Back Cuts and Layoffs
Campuses that panic and implement cuts and layoffs - even as the state budget is still being decided - are causing serious and unnecessary harm. And CSUEU members are out there to make sure our counter message is heard: We need full CSU funding and we need the University to keep its promise to students and staff!
Dominguez Hills - With steady enrollment, campus issued 33 layoffs last month. We fought back and preserved 19 staff positions!
Sonoma State - State legislators joined our efforts to save the University and have set a second public hearing later this month.
Channel Islands - Managerial positions on campus have increased by nearly 40% since 2013 despite enrollment declines. Our weekly rallies with labor allies continue to grow!

Stanislaus State - Management positions grew by 61% in the past decade and now they want to lay off 18 staff members and reassign 11 others. Mismanagement of university finances does not justify cutting critical support staff.
Our contract requires that CSU management bargain with us over any layoffs of our represented employees. We need everyone to protect our jobs. Every member we have makes our ability to fight these layoffs more effective.
CSUEU Student Assistant Unionization Earns Spotlight at National Labor Conference
CSUEU member leaders were invited to participate in this year's labor conference hosted at Hunter College by the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions.
The three-day conference (March 23-25) featured panels and workshops with topics ranging from campus protests to AI to the state of Higher Ed funding.
Union President Catherine Hutchinson, Student Assistant Bargaining Team member Kaily Brooks, and Executive Director Jim Philliou spoke on the panel, "The New Wave of Campus Student Workers: The Historic Unionization of CSU Student Assistants."

"Student assistants are crucial to the CSU system. We are doing jobs all over campus, from janitorial work to IT to front desk positions. It is imperative that the CSU recognize the importance of our work and begin to compensate us fairly. No student should face food insecurity, poverty, or homelessness because their on-campus job at the school they attend doesn’t pay them a living wage." - Kaily Brooks, SDSU
Steward Spotlight
Krisha Algoso, of Channel Islands, recently signed up for steward training and after spending one Saturday with other member activists, she is a proud - and empowered - holder of a CSUEU Steward Certificate!
"Being part of a union is very important to me. I have many coworkers who are heavily involved in CSUEU since I've started working at CI, and I've witnessed how crucial their roles are in fighting for fair contracts and advocating for members. I’d like to be a union steward to follow in their footsteps."

From César Chávez Day to ICE Detentions, CSUEU Members Speak Up for Immigrant Rights
The First Amendment right to free speech and peaceful assembly applies to all who set foot on U.S. soil. Full stop. Today, SEIU members took to social media to oppose the Trump Administration for targeting immigrant students who speak up. View this clip from CSUEU Vice President for Organizing Erin Foote.
Rumeysa Ozturk, graduate student at Tufts University and an SEIU Local 509 member, was on her way to Ramadan services on March 25 when masked federal immigration officials detained and transported her to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.
Ozturk's offense, apparently, was co-writing with other students an opinion essay for the Tufts student newspaper that was critical of the university for not sanctioning Israel over the war in Gaza.
In recent weeks, the Trump Administration has arrested foreign students, including Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student activist from Columbia University, who speak out against U.S. policies in the Middle East. As a union organization that protects workers' rights, we, too must speak out when our First Amendment's rights are under attack. We support the Service Employees International Union leadership issuing a statement to demand that our government respect due process and free speech.

CSUEU members throughout the state gathered in Delano to celebrate César Chávez Day on Monday (March 31). What started out as a fight for justice for farm workers grew to become a fight for all workers. CSUEU Chapter Presidents Ken Castillo (Los Angeles) and Fortune Garcia (Fresno) joined the march to support immigrant rights and oppose the current federal policy of mass deportations without due process.
