Strike Authorization Vote FAQ

The decision to strike is one of the most important choices union members can make. The strike is our most powerful tool to win what we deserve at the bargaining table with management. Read more about what a strike entails here. Prior to CSUEU members walking off the job in order to win better pay and benefits, each member has the opprotunity to vote to authorize a strike. Only members can make this decision, and a strike cannot occur unless a majority of members authorize one to take place. 

What is a strike authorization vote?

A strike authorization vote allows union members to authorize the CSUEU Board of Directors to call a strike or other concerted job action if it becomes necessary during bargaining. It does not mean a strike will automatically occur.

What percentage of votes is needed for authorization?

A simple majority, or 50%+1. However, in order for a strike to be successful we need to completely shut down campus, which would require a supermajority of workers to participate in a strike. We would want as many people as possible to vote Yes to authorize a strike as a show of our unity and strength, so that the CSU would understand the threat. 

Does a "Yes" vote mean we are going on strike?

No. A strike authorization vote gives the Board of Directors the authority to call a strike if circumstances warrant. It does not require a strike to happen.

Who has the authority to call for a strike authorization vote?

Under CSUEU Policy File Section 606.01, the Board of Directors may initiate concerted actions, including a strike authorization vote, whenever it determines such action is necessary to support the bargaining process.

Before any concerted action is implemented, the Board meets in closed session to determine:

• Which members will participate;
• What type of action is appropriate;
• When the action will occur; and
• How the affected members will be polled.

Who decides whether a strike authorization vote will occur?

Ultimately, the CSUEU Board of Directors determines whether to authorize and conduct a strike authorization vote, either on its own initiative or after completing the petition process described in Policy File Section 606.

Why hold a strike authorization vote before a strike is called?

A strike authorization vote demonstrates member solidarity and provides the union with the authority it may need during negotiations. Having authorization in place strengthens the union's bargaining position and allows the Board to act quickly if negotiations reach the point where a strike or other concerted action becomes necessary.

Is a strike the only type of concerted action?

No. CSUEU Policy File refers broadly to concerted actions, which can include a variety of collective activities designed to support bargaining. A strike is one possible form of concerted action, but the Board of Directors determines the specific type of action that is appropriate under the circumstances.

Have we voted in 2026 to authorize a strike yet? 

No, as of July 23, 2026 CSUEU members have not yet authorized a strike. Our bargaining team has met 6 times, and the CSU has made forward progress on proposals. On the issues that matter most, however, the CSU has not shown us they are willing to consider fair pay for our members to be a top priority. Unless this changes quickly, members should take the necessary steps to prepare for a strike authorization vote.
