CSUEU Notice of Nominations and Elections for SEIU International Convention Delegates
Notice of Member Convention Delegate Election
This notice is to inform CSUEU/SEIU Local 2579 members that we will be electing delegates to the SEIU’s International Convention to be held May 20 – 22, 2024, in Philadelphia, PA. Delegates to the Convention (which is held once every four years) are elected from each of the local unions within SEIU to set the course of the International Union for the coming period: they will elect the International union officers, establish the goals, strategies and determine the political and legislative priorities.
Applying the language of the CSUEU Policy File for Statewide Elections, an Election Committee has been formed with representatives from Northern, Central, and Southern California. The Election Committee has the authority to run the upcoming election, and its decisions concerning the petitioning process for nominations, the dates, times, and locations of voting, as well as other rules affecting the elections, are set forth below or will be otherwise communicated to our membership.
The Election Committee has determined that nominating petitions for Delegates to the SEIU Convention will be available from February 13, 2024, through February 28, 2024.
Eligibility to be a Candidate
The Election Committee has determined that eligibility to be a candidate for Delegate to the Convention shall be the same as that set forth in the CSUEU Bylaws. Any active member (whose dues are current as of January 2024) is considered to be in good standing and is eligible to be a candidate.
Who can Nominate Candidates for Office?
To be elected as a delegate to the International Union Convention, an active member in good standing can request a Nomination Petition and Delegate Acceptance Letter from the Election Committee via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Each Nomination Petition must be signed by twenty (20) CSUEU members in good standing (members whose dues are current as of January 2024). Digital signatures are acceptable.
Deadline for Nominations
All Nomination Petitions and Delegate Acceptance Letters must be received by the Elections Committee via email at email@example.com no later than 5:00 p.m. on February 28, 2024. The Election Committee will review the Nomination Petitions to confirm that all nominees and their signatories are members in good standing. The Election Committee recommends submitting Nomination Petitions before the deadline so there may be an opportunity to collect more signatures if the Election Committee determines the Nomination Petition does not have enough signatures from members in good standing.
Once all Nomination Petitions have been reviewed and certified, a candidate list will be created and certified by the Election Committee. Delegate nominees will be notified of their candidacy.
At that point, candidates can begin lining up supporters to vote for them in the delegate elections. They may submit a candidate statement of 500 words or less to the Election Committee no later than March 5, 2024. The candidate statements will be emailed to all members in good standing by March 7, 2024. Only members in good standing as of February 2024 may vote for delegates.
Election Dates and Locations
Elections will occur Thursday, March 14, 2024 [voting hours 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.] and Friday, March 15, 2024 [voting hours 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.]. Elections will be held in person by secret ballot at all CSU campuses and the Chancellor’s Office.
Challenge to Petitions or Other Election-Related Challenge
The Election Committee will resolve any questions or challenges about the sufficiency of the signatures on the Nomination Petitions, about the qualification of an individual to be a candidate or any other question relating to the nominating process and the certification of candidates. Any election-related challenge must be submitted to the Election Committee via email at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 3 days after the occurrence.
