NAME : Fortunato “Fortune” Garcia CAMPUS : CSU Fresno JOB TITLE : Gardening Specialist YEARS : 8 What is your negotiation experience and/or how do you plan to contribute during this bargaining process? I am new to this but I negotiate everyday with my wife, my kids, my neighbors and my managers. We negotiate solutions to problems at work daily. I’ve attended a steward training and participated in the CSUEU Board of Directors meeting for Unit 5 now that I’ve been elected as chair for our bargaining unit. What support/service do you provide at your campus? I bring 30-plus years of landscape horticulture and gardening experience to my campus. I am responsible for all aspects of the maintenance; grass, trees, shrubs and flowers around campus buildings, parking lots and the University House. In addition, our team is called for installation and maintenance of irrigation, trash, recycling, pest control and event support. What do you most enjoy about your work at the CSU? I always think about how to improve and make my campus cleaner, greener, safer and inspirational for our students and faculty. When you walk onto my campus, I want you to feel like when you step into a new car. I enjoy planting flowers throughout the campus. Painting the campus with colors brings joy, calmness and a sense of pride. It inspires our students. What would you improve at the CSU to make it a premiere employer? Wages! Wages! Wages! Train managers to stop bullying our members. Train our members to be better at their craft and create opportunities for our members to grow and advance to higher skill level and better compensation. What does a union mean to you? Union means security, stability and strength.
