Layoffs Update by Russell Kilday-Hicks, VP for Representation The following campuses have noticed* the union of intended layoffs so far. We expect more. Fresno: The union was noticed this morning, April 22, of 36 BU 7 and 24 BU 9 intended layoffs; meeting dates have not been discussed yet. San Jose: Notice given on April 15 that included: 2 in BU 2, 50 in BU 7, and 21 in BU 9; meeting dates are being discussed and will likely be held in May. Humboldt: On March 1, Humboldt State noticed the union with 21 BU 7, 27 BU 9 proposed layoffs. Bargaining was on April 13-15; we are close to an agreement; grievances have been filed; HSU rescinded some notices that were not done properly and converted them to reassignments. East Bay: On February 16, 16 positions in BU 5, 39 in BU 7, and 31 in BU 9 were announced, including 40 additional reassignments; after two meetings an agreement on voluntary time-reduction programs reached on April 6; additional issues are on the table, waiting for a counter from CSU; additional layoff notices may come from bumping; grievances have been filed. Office of the Chancellor: one position in BU 7 announced on January 28; bargaining team met twice, most recently on April 1; no agreement reached yet; grievances and Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges have been filed. The Bargaining team and local chapter leaders will do everything we can to mitigate these layoffs. One part will be to make agreements with campus management that will protect employees who choose to take a voluntary time reduction, another part will come from the many of us who are able to reduce our time to help out our fellow employees. These are hard times, and they may get harder, but at least we have our union community to help. Thanks for your support. View a spreadsheet with layoffs information for all chapters.   *This is a bit of technical jargon meaning that CSU sent a notice to the union in accordance with Article 24 of the CSU/CSUEU contract.
