The CSU Board of Trustees approved a 10% salary bump for two new incoming campus presidents on Oct. 29: Cathy A. Sandeen for CSU East Bay and Erika D. Beck for CSU Northridge. President Beck currently leads the Channel Islands campus. Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis opposed the executive pay increase, rightfully arguing that during a pandemic and amidst layoffs was not the right time to boost executive pay. Joining the Lt. Governor in the 10-7 vote were: Trustees Silas Abrego; Douglas Faigin; Maryana Khames; Lillian Kimbell; Krystal Raynes; and Romey Sabalius. View the board discussion starting at the 10 a.m. session. Multiple CSUEU leaders objected to the board decision. President Neil Jacklin said: 'This is deeply disappointing and sends a terrible message to California’s taxpayers as well as CSU employees. Early in Chancellor White’s tenure here, the state experienced the great recession of 2008. Chancellor White made the decision then to freeze his salary as well as those of the campus presidents. It was the right decision then. It would serve the University well for you, as trustees, to demonstrate that leadership now.'
