Energized and committed to bringing about real change to the CSU, members of the CSU Employees Union (CSUEU) Legislative Committee pulled off a stunning 2018 Lobby Day, powered by 60-plus members who descended on the Capitol to blitz every single legislator’s office on Tuesday, April 17. See our album: www.facebook.com/csueu It was a real team effort; this year for the first time, members of the Academic Professionals of California (APC) joined CSUEU as we lobbied Assemblymembers and Senators to advocate for CSUEU-sponsored legislation: Restoring 5% salary steps to all CSU represented staff (AB 1231 - authored by Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber) Requiring CSU accountability and transparency addressing management growth and merit evaluations ( SB 1351 - authored by Senator Ed Hernandez ). Augmenting the CSU budget to address health and safety issues which are the focus of a state audit, sponsored by CSUEU, scheduled to be released April 24. Members from both unions submitted 1,600 letters to their district legislators as part of a letter-writing campaign to explain the problems of not having merit salary step increases based on performance and years of service. “It’s my first time lobbying and I’m very excited," said Brenda Aguilar, Cal State LA. "It’s been a very rewarding experience meeting my assembly members and senators. Everyone is welcoming and receptive to what we are requesting their support on. Hopefully we can schedule district office visits or they can come to our campuses so we can continue the conversations.” Dr. Weber and Senator Ben Allen, along with Senator Anthony Portantino, joined attendees for an awards dinner on Monday night when they were honored for their dedication and actions to improve the lives of CSU employees. “We have key champions in Sacramento who believe in the value of our work and in the need to keep the CSU accountable and transparent to its students and the communities it serves,” said Kim Harrington, CSUEU Legislative Committee Chair. “Our strategy is simple - keep speaking up, and standing strong together. Our days of being silent and underappreciated are over.” Be part of the solution, join us now !
